Dear Parents & Carers
A belated Happy New Year to all our students, families and associates.
January is a busy month, with a Year 8 Options Evening, an Awards Evening for Year 7, a Year 9 Parents’ Evening and three evening performances of our drama production all going on. In school, exam year groups are acting on the analysis of their mock results, and the real GCSEs and A levels will be with us very soon. There are very many revision opportunities and interventions running each week, meaning that if your child is in Year 11 or 13, they should really reset their school day to end at 4.30pm rather than 3.10pm so they can make sure they are taking advantage of these additional classes.
More generally, we are looking at day-to-day assessment in school and will be implementing some changes in this area. Uniform is also a focus for us this month. On the whole our students are very smart and well turned out, but if they have the wrong footwear or their skirt is too short, for example, it will need to be corrected. Attendance is also a theme for January. A new year is an opportunity to boost attendance and we will be issuing some targets for individual students to meet over the next few weeks. A student who averages 90% attendance during their time at Myton misses 6 months of secondary education by the time they sit their exams; 95% equates to 3 months lost. This affects progress, grades, chances and futures. Over 95% is where all children must be.
Finally, we are also looking at our extra-curricular clubs with a view to expanding the number and diversity of the clubs we offer at lunchtime and after school. To this end, we are discussing with students what opportunities we should offer and this will be one of the first strategic areas the new Student Council will focus on.
As ever, I thank you for your support and look forward to a successful 2018.
