WHY STUDY THIS SUBJECT?
If you are interested in the people and the world around you then this may be the course for you. If you think that it is unfair that some have nothing whilst others live a life of luxury then this course will go some way to explaining the causes behind that. It is a challenging yet highly interesting course.
WHAT SKILLS WILL I DEVELOP?
- Empathy, understanding as well as the ability to debate about the current issues that are going on in society.
- Essay writing skills and the evaluation skills necessary to be successful at many other subject areas.
WHAT WILL I STUDY?
Unit 1 – Education with Theory and Methods – to include topics such as:
- Marxism
- Feminism
- Postmodernism
Unit 2 – Topics in Sociology – to include topics such as:
- Families and Households
- Beliefs in Society
Unit 3 – Crime and Deviance – to include topics such as:
- The Relationship between Gender, Ethnicity, Class and Crime

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
100% exam at the end of Year 13.
WHAT ARE MY POST-18 OPTIONS?
Due to the topics studied and skills developed, Sociology is a great choice of subject for people who want to work in careers such as nursing, social work, medicine, advertising, journalism, law and teaching amongst others.
