Our A level physics students have recently returned from a visit to CERN – the European Organisation for Nuclear Research in Switzerland – home of the Large Hadron Collider.
During the visit, which took place between 30 January – 2 February, they discovered how CERN is helping to answer some fundamental questions such as: How did the Universe begin? What are the basic building blocks of matter?
They also gained an appreciation of some of the technical and engineering challenges involved in scientific breakthroughs such as the discovery of the Higgs boson.
The students also found time to have a look at the Seujet Dam which was built to control the water levels of Lake Geneva, regulate the flow of the Rhone and produce electricity.
Mr Benjamin, our Head of Physics, said: “The scale of the science and technology we’ve seen is awe-inspiring. I hope that having the opportunity to see it first-hand will have brought physics to life for these young people and made them think differently about future education and career choices.”
