On Friday 28 February, former Myton student, Amrik Singh Kooner (Myton 1975-1980) came into school to share some memories and let us know what he’s been up to in the years since he left school.
Since leaving Myton, Amrik has had a wide and varied career including training as a furniture maker and setting up his own sofa business, and founding the Akaal Channel, a satellite TV channel for the Sikh community which broadcasts to 148 countries.
He has been actively involved in delivering aid around the world as part of the charity he founded – Akaal Aid – including travelling to Nepal, Italy and Indonesia in the aftermath of catastrophic earthquakes, Sri Lanka, Kerala, Bihar and Punjab following devastating floods and Syria and Ethiopia to provide relief to people displaced by war. Most recently, Amrik was in the Indian State of Odisha following a severe cyclone.
Amrik has earned numerous awards, both personally and professionally, including the Sikh 100 Award, 2018 (100 most influential Sikhs in the world), the Best Sikh Media Award, 2017 and the Best World Media Award, 2018.
Coming back to school brought back lots of memories for Amrik: “When I went into assembly room, it smelt the same. It brought tears to my eyes. It was very very emotional walking around the school. While I was going upstairs towards the library the 10 o’clock bell went off and I had goosebumps. With all the kids running around I could see myself and my friends in 75-80. It was a moving experience. I miss those days so much.”
