Regular presentations from external speakers aimed at preparing students in Year 12 and Year 13 for life outside school, are being scheduled during the school year.
According to Assistant Heads of Sixth Form, Mrs Millington and Mr Garner, the fortnightly sessions (on Tuesday during Week 2 and Wednesdays in Week 1) are designed to broaden students’ horizons, enthuse, enrich, inspire or just inform.
“The initiative is aimed at being something out of students’ normal curriculum or life experience. For the love of being a more rounded individual,” explained Mrs Millington (pictured outside the Upper School Hall is Mrs Millington with Head Teacher Mr Perry who opened the presentations with a talk on the decision he makes and the reasons for doing so).
“We have a mixture of internal and external speakers, delivering all manner of different themes. We have a human rights barrister, a family judge, someone from a charity who plans to talk about organ donation, a foodbank representative and someone from a local business.”
Mrs Millington and Mr Garner are also appealing to parents and carers to get in touch if they would like to be involved or know anyone who might be keen to participate.
“We are looking for anyone who has a passion, interest, unusual or motivating story to tell. We are looking for those who can show our students that anything is possible or just to open their minds. They would need to prepare a speech lasting around 40-45 minutes and be prepared to answer questions. If they have a story to tell, a passion to share or just think they can offer a helping hand they are welcome!” said Mr Garner.
The aim is to prepare students for uni and work – sitting and listening to a lecture/presentation and thinking about a topic that they may not have considered before. The sessions will also provide and insight into how students should conduct themselves in a presentation setting and consider suitable questions to ask, giving them the confidence to talk appropriately in front of a group.
