WHY STUDY THIS SUBJECT?
Studying Art and Design (Textile Design) provides entry to an unprecedented range of specialisms, skills – both traditional and digital – and careers. Studying the subject can help develop:
- intellectual, imaginative, creative and intuitive capabilities
- investigative, analytical, experimental, practical, technical and expressive skills, aesthetic understanding and critical judgement
- independence of mind in developing, refining and communicating your own ideas, your own intentions and your vown personal outcomes

WHAT WILL I STUDY?
Art and Design (Textile Design) encompasses a broad range of materials, techniques and processes, including a growing number of interdisciplinary approaches. These comprise of woven, embroidered, knitted, printed, painted, dyed, manipulated, embellished and constructional methods which are utilised to produce a great variety of textile outcomes that include costume and fashion design, accessories and body adornment.
Students will work on personal ideas developed from the study of artists, craft workers and designers and experiment with techniques, processes, imagery and concepts before developing larger scale pieces of textiles to realise their intentions.
Possible areas of study include:
- fashion and/or costume
- digitally or traditionally printed and/or dyed fabrics, garments and materials
- constructed textiles (knitted, woven, embellished or combined with other materials)
- textile installation
- accessories
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
There are two components at A level:
Component 1: Personal Investigation – consists of two integrated constituent parts:
a) A major in-depth critical, practical and theoretical investigative Textiles based project/portfolio and outcome/s based on themes and subject matter that have personal significance.
b) An extended written element of 1000 words minimum, which may contain images and texts and must clearly relate to practical and theoretical work using an appropriate working vocabulary and specialist terminology.
Component 2: Externally Set Assignment
This component is based on preparatory study that leads to a 15 hour period of sustained focus in which you will produce a response to a chosen visual or written stimuli. As with the Personal Investigation, it is a practical project of Textiles based work produced independently.

Foundation Studies in Art & Design, degree in Art & Design, Costume Design, Interior Design, Art History, Printmaking, Fashion & Textiles, and Textiles. Working in galleries, education, film, media, theatre, the fashion industry, textile design and production.
