Dear Parents and Carers
Firstly, I would like to thank the parents and ex students who have responded to the newsletter to join FOMS – Friends of Myton School. It’s great to see this group growing once again and getting started on projects which will improve the provision for all students at school. If you are interested in joining them, please take a look at their website and email your interest to [email protected].
Another way in which parents support the school is through governance. Being a school governor is a weighty responsibility but is also very rewarding. I see it from both sides; as a Head Teacher being held to account by governors at Myton but also as a governor of my child’s school. The advice, challenge and input I receive from Myton governors is gold dust to me. Whilst I have worked at Myton for a long time now, I don’t live in this community, but the governors do. They know the things that make this community unique and a wonderful place to live, they know what aspects of the community need improving and their perspective of our school is that of a Myton parent, an experience I will never have. It is our governors who have final say on the priorities in our Improvement Plan, the strategic direction of the school and how to spend capital sums of money. And so it should be, the Governors all live locally and in most cases have their children here, they are passionate about getting it right. Once the decisions have been made, the role is about support and challenge in equal measure. All Leadership Teams need the support of their Governing Body but we also need them to scrutinise the outcomes and ask the awkward questions.
Over recent years, all Governing Bodies have tried to ensure a balance of skills in order to support and challenge in all areas; education, finance, safeguarding, health and safety etc. It is these skills audits which inform us to go to our parents to advertise vacancies. If you do have something you could offer to the Governing Body or to FOMS, please contact us and put your name forward, it would be good to hear from you. Mike Oldridge, the Chair of Governors has written in the newsletter to advertise for new Governors so please take a look and get in touch.
Best wishes
Andy Perry – Head Teacher
