Dear Parents and Carers
I hope you are enjoying the sophisticated level of debate on our screens as this General Election campaign passes its midpoint. As party leaders, Ministers, Shadow Ministers and others all shout and scream over each other, telling what everybody knows are bare faced lies and generally achieving a sophistication which never quite reaches a Wetherspoons on a Friday evening, I always think what a great example they are to us and especially our young.
Mind you, the younger voters need to also take a look at themselves. They like to complain a lot about everything but then, when there is an election and they can do something about it, less than half cast a vote. Is it any wonder that the main parties put out so few ideas to benefit younger people when they have largely disenfranchised themselves? If young people want change, then they must start voting in the same kind of numbers as the more elderly, who regularly have a turnout of 85-90%. Once this happens, we may see some fresh thinking and far better representation. We have been pushing this with our Year 13 students, telling them both how to register and what voter ID they will need. I hope they listen and that we can buck the trend around our communities.
As it happens, there is an opportunity to see our local candidates in action and to pose questions to them. This year, Myton is working with local schools to put on a husting event which will be hosted by Campion School. This is especially open to first time voters and please do push them to attend. However, all constituency residents are welcome and can take part. It is next Tuesday 18 June from 7pm to 9pm. To book your place and to pose a question to the candidates please use this link or scan the QR code below. It would be great to see as many of our students, ex students who are voting for the first time, and our parents and carers at the event. And let’s hope for something more edifying than the TV debates, otherwise it’s back to Wetherspoons tonight.
Best wishes
Andy Perry
