Two teams of budding scientists from last year’s Year 13 and Year 11 have won £2,000 in school prizes for a major science competition.
The annual challenge is run by Kew Gardens and the students and Science teacher, Mr Hobbs, found out in the summer that they had been successful.
The students were tasked with deciding on projects associated with plant science and then completed investigations and wrote up reports with photos.
The Year 13 duo, Ellan and Pavneet (who have since left school), worked on extracting DNA from plants; and the other group – pictured below with Mr Perry and Mr Hobbs – was made up of Zaynab, Rhiannon, Layla, Jaya and Sophia, from Year 10 (now Year 11), and investigated plant diseases on site.
Both groups won their individual categories meaning the Science department was awarded £1000 from each group entry to spend on vital equipment. Students will be involved in how the department spends the money!
Mr Hobbs said “Everyone involved really benefited from the project, developing their teamworking skills, completing extra research and responding to teacher feedback to make improvements. As well as developing their own understanding of plant biology, they also learned a great deal about how Kew Gardens is involved in plant research and safeguarding plants for the future.”
Well done everyone!
