Head Teacher Message
Dear Parents and Carers
We have had a busy and eventful start to the academic year (and this year for all the right reasons) with a half term packed with great activities, events and trips. We’ve had (among others) Art and Photography trips to Birmingham, a visit to Cadbury’s World, fieldtrips to Shrewsbury and Carding Mill Valley and students start their root to shoots project at Mallory Court Hotel. We have welcomed guests to deliver workshops in school, from the NCS providing skills booster sessions to Explorer Dome, who brought their immersive planetary dome experience to our Year 9s. Our sport teams have celebrated successes and as you will read this week, the KS3 debating club have debated their way into a competition semi-final. We ended Black History Month with an African dance workshop and disco (you can read an excellent write up of this in this week’s newsletter by Year 13 student Izzie).

General News
Year 13 student Izzie writes about this week’s African dance workshop and disco below.
As October draws to a close, it marks the end of Black History Month, and here at Myton we’ve spent the month bringing awareness to the experiences black people have faced historically as well as presently. We are embracing the motto ‘young, black and listened to’ which reflects Myton’s purpose of fostering a safe and comfortable environment for students of all backgrounds. We have also been celebrating the rich culture of black heritage, specifically with the Afrobeats dance workshop and disco that was held on Monday night. Organised by Miss Zahran and Miss Jones, the Upper School Hall hosted students and their parents, for an evening honouring African dance and music.

Congratulations to our KS3 Debate Club who have reached the semi-finals of a debating competition held at Kenilworth School this week. Topics debated included: ‘It is important for children to learn about the plays of William Shakespeare’, ‘The voting age should be lowered to 16′, There are too many languages in the world’, ‘Water is the most valuable resource’ and ‘Overall, social media is a negative influence on children’.
Well done to you all!

Year 8 Computing students were given the opportunity to take part in a ‘Connected Communities’ workshop led by volunteers from the tech industry this week. The two-period session, led by Digital Skills Education and supported by Cellnex UK volunteers, engaged Year 7 and 8 students in hands-on coding activities using microbits and a map of a virtual city. The students explored smart city technology by configuring sensors and controlling traffic systems, learning valuable coding skills and gaining insights into potential tech careers. The students enjoyed the interactive learning experience and the volunteers were very impressed by the questions they asked. Thank you to Mr Stone who helped get this session running!

We are supporting the Poppy Appeal this year. Remembrance Day poppies will be available to students for a cash donation in form time and at break/lunchtime outside Upper School Hall from Monday 4 November (paper poppies have no minimum donation amount, metal poppies are a minimum £1 donation please).
We are aware that some of our students cycle to and from school without cycle helmets. Studies show that wearing a cycle helmet reduces risk of serious head injury by almost 70% and fatal head injury by 65%. A recent cycling accident involving one of our students would have been much more serious had they not been wearing their cycle helmet.
Please could parents and carers strongly encourage their child to wear a cycle helmet when riding their bike.
Further information on cycle safety can be found here and you can watch James Cracknell’s cycle helmet appeal below.
