We’re very proud of former Myton student, Karenjeet Bains who has won the British Universities Powerlifting title at her first attempt. She represented Durham University at the Cambridge University Sports Centre on Saturday 12th March. Karenjeet went into the event as the reigning British and English Powerlifting Champion, and competed in the Junior Women’s 63kg category.
Karenjeet achieved 122.5kg in the Squat, and equalled her personal best of 65kg in the Bench Press. On her final lift of the competition, she was roared on by the crowd to a phenomenal 147.5kg in the Deadlift, which was a new personal best in the discipline. Her unequipped total of 335kg across all three lifts equalled her U23 British Record, and was statistically the strongest pound for pound lifter in the women’s competition across all weight categories.
Karenjeet commented “I’ve really enjoyed my first British Universities Powerlifting Championships, and am glad I put in a performance that reflected the hard work and dedication I’ve put in to the sport. With another 4 years remaining in the same age category, I am very much looking forward to building upon my performances and seeing how far I can really go”.
Karenjeet has dedicated this latest title to Ambika Acharya who died tragically last month.
